Lasius grandis is a robust and adaptable ant species native to the western Mediterranean region, particularly found in Spain, Portugal, and parts of North Africa. Often mistaken for Lasius niger due to its similar appearance, Lasius grandis is notably larger, more resilient to heat, and a bit more assertive in its foraging. For both beginners and experienced ant keepers looking for a low-maintenance, heat-tolerant species, Lasius grandis offers a reliable and rewarding colony experience.

  • In nature, Lasius grandis nests in dry, warm environments, often in soil, under stones, or within decaying wood in open, sunlit areas. The species is monogynous, with a single queen founding and leading the colony.

Colonies grow steadily and can reach up to 10,000 workers over time. Workers are 5–6 mm in size and slightly larger and shinier than Lasius niger. Queens measure 8–9 mm. The ants are known for their efficient foraging, especially in warm temperatures, and their ability to handle Mediterranean drought conditions better than many related species.
