Camponotus barbaricus is a large and impressive carpenter ant species native to the western Mediterranean region, including Spain, Portugal, and parts of North Africa. These ants are among the larger European Camponotus species and are known for their striking appearance, with dark bodies and large polymorphic workers. Colonies are monogynous, meaning they have one queen, and under good conditions they can grow rapidly. Because of their size, gentle temperament, and fascinating colony behavior, Camponotus barbaricus is a very popular species among ant keepers.

  • In the wild Camponotus barbaricus inhabits warm Mediterranean environments such as dry grasslands, open woodland, and rocky landscapes. They typically build their nests in soil, often under stones or within loose ground where the nest can remain protected and warm. Colonies show a strong division of labor with minor workers responsible for brood care and foraging while the large majors help defend the colony and process food.

This species is mostly nocturnal and workers are usually most active during the evening and night. Colonies grow relatively quickly for a Camponotus species and can reach around one thousand workers within one and a half to two years, sometimes growing to several thousand workers in mature colonies.
