Pheidole militicida is a remarkable ant species known for its extreme polymorphism and highly aggressive behavior. It is the second largest Pheidole species in the USA. Native to tropical regions, this species is a fascinating choice for experienced ant keepers who enjoy observing complex colony dynamics, especially the contrast between tiny minor workers and massive-headed major soldiers. While their appearance and behavior are captivating, Pheidole militicida colonies grow quickly and must be managed with care due to their potential to overrun setups if not contained properly.

  • Pheidole militicida is a bicolonial ant species consisting of two clearly defined castes: small, fast-moving minor workers, and large-headed major soldiers (also called supermajors). These majors are specialized in colony defense and food processing, using their strong mandibles to crack seeds or defend against intruders. Colonies tend to be monogynous, with one queen per colony.

In nature, they thrive in warm, semi-arid to tropical environments, often nesting in soil or under rocks, and they form extensive underground networks. Their colonies can reach several thousand individuals and are capable of rapid expansion given the right conditions.
