Camponotus discolor is a striking carpenter ant species native to North America, particularly found in the southeastern United States. This species is known for its beautiful color variation, often displaying a combination of dark brown to black with lighter reddish or orange tones. Colonies are monogynous, meaning there is one queen per colony, and can grow to several thousand workers over time. With their size, coloration, and calm behavior, Camponotus discolor is a very attractive species for ant keepers.

  • In the wild Camponotus discolor inhabits forests, woodland edges, and areas with decaying wood. They typically nest in rotting logs, tree stumps, or sometimes underground near wooden structures. Like other carpenter ants, they prefer pre-existing cavities rather than excavating large nests themselves.

Workers are active foragers and search for both sugary liquids and protein sources such as insects. Colonies develop steadily and show a clear division of labor between smaller workers that care for brood and forage, and larger majors that help defend the colony and process food.
