Camponotus rufoglaucus is a large carpenter ant species that occurs across parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The population commonly kept in the hobby from Thailand is known for its uniform deep black coloration and impressive worker size. Unlike the African forms sometimes called “velvet ants”, the Thai form is smooth and glossy black. Colonies are monogynous with one queen and can grow to several thousand workers when mature. Because of their size, visibility, and active behavior, Camponotus rufoglaucus is a very attractive species for ant keepers.

  • In the wild Camponotus rufoglaucus typically inhabits warm tropical and subtropical environments such as forests, plantations, and open woodland areas. Colonies are usually established in soil, under stones, inside dead wood, or within hollow plant material. Workers are strong foragers and will travel considerable distances to collect food. Like many Camponotus species, the colony has polymorphic workers with smaller minors performing brood care and foraging, while larger majors assist with defense and food processing. Colonies grow steadily under warm conditions and are most active during the evening and night in hot climates.
