Camponotus sylvaticus is a large, ground-dwelling carpenter ant native to Southern Europe and parts of the Mediterranean. Known for its robust appearance and active foraging behavior, this monogynous species is ideal for intermediate antkeepers due to its tolerance for moderate climates and slower colony growth. With their deep black coloration and powerful mandibles, these ants are both visually striking and a pleasure to observe.

  • Camponotus sylvaticus typically inhabits dry woodlands, forest edges, and open scrubland, building its nests under stones, in soil, or sometimes in decaying wood. Colonies are monogynous and grow slowly, often reaching a few thousand workers over the years.

    • Queen: Around 14–16 mm, deep black, often with a slightly reddish thorax.

    • Workers: Range from 6–10 mm, shiny black, polymorphic (minor and major workers).

    • Behavior: They are generally calm and avoid confrontation, but majors will readily defend the colony if needed. These ants are mainly nocturnal and prefer foraging at dusk or in shaded areas.
