Camponotus turkestanicus is a beautiful and highly active carpenter ant species native to Central Asia and surrounding dry regions. This species is known for its elegant appearance, strong worker polymorphism, and impressive majors with large heads and powerful mandibles. Colonies are monogynous, meaning they contain a single queen, and can grow into large thriving colonies over time. Their combination of size, activity, and adaptability makes Camponotus turkestanicus a fantastic species for both intermediate and experienced ant keepers.
Camponotus turkestanicus
In the wild Camponotus turkestanicus inhabits dry steppes, rocky grasslands, and semi-arid regions where temperatures can become very high during the day. They typically build their nests underground, under stones, or within dry soil where humidity remains more stable than on the surface.
Workers are active foragers and search for sweet liquids and protein sources such as insects. Colonies become especially active in warm conditions and develop steadily when provided with enough heat and food. Majors play an important role in colony defense and food processing due to their large mandibles.
This species is well adapted to dry environments with localized humidity inside the nest chambers.
