Aphaenogaster geei

In nature Aphaenogaster geei inhabits forest edges, leaf litter, and lightly vegetated areas where they build nests in soil, under stones, or within rotting wood. They are highly active foragers and rely on their speed and agility to explore their surroundings and locate food.

Workers often forage individually rather than in large trails and are known for their scavenging behavior. They collect a wide variety of food including insects, seeds, and sugary substances. Colonies are usually modest in size, often consisting of a few hundred workers, which makes their behavior easy to observe in captivity.

Temperature
Aphaenogaster geei prefers moderate to warm temperatures between 22 and 28°C. Gentle heating can help stimulate brood development and overall colony activity.

Humidity
This species prefers a moderately humid nest with slightly drier conditions in the outworld. Regular light hydration of the nest is usually sufficient.

Food
Provide a varied diet consisting of:
small insects such as fruit flies, crickets, or mealworms
sugar water or honey water for energy
occasionally seeds or small food particles as they are opportunistic feeders

Hibernation
Depending on origin, a mild winter rest at slightly lower temperatures can be beneficial, but it is not always strictly required in captivity.

Nest and setup
Aphaenogaster geei adapts well to acrylic nests, plaster nests, ytong nests, or naturalistic setups with soil and leaf litter. A well-sized outworld is recommended because of their high activity level.

Escape prevention
This species is fast and agile, so good escape prevention is important. Use proper barriers such as PTFE or similar coatings.

Defense
Workers can bite when disturbed but are generally non-aggressive and easy to manage.
