Camponotus japonicus, also known as the Japanese carpenter ant, is a large and impressive ant species native to East Asia, especially Japan, China, and Korea. These ants are known for their deep black coloration, strong colony organization, and large worker sizes. Colonies are monogynous, meaning there is one queen per colony. In mature colonies the population can reach up to around 5000 workers. Because of their size, calm behavior, and beautiful appearance, Camponotus japonicus is a very popular species among ant keepers.

  • In nature Camponotus japonicus lives in forests, grasslands, and semi-urban environments throughout East Asia. They usually build their nests in soil, under stones, inside rotten wood, or sometimes within wooden structures. The colonies have a clear division of labor with smaller workers caring for brood and foraging while larger majors help with defense and processing food. Workers forage actively for both sugary liquids and protein sources such as insects. Colonies grow steadily and can become quite large over time, forming well organized societies.
