In nature, Camponotus texanus nests in dead wood, under bark, or within rotting logs, especially in semi-arid and forested areas. Colonies are monogynous, typically consisting of a single queen and polymorphic workers (minors, medias, and majors). They are primarily nocturnal foragers, searching for sugary substances and small insects in warm evening hours. Their natural range includes much of the southern U.S., with a focus on Texas and surrounding regions.

Colonies are often sold with a queen and a small number of workers. Their manageable temperament, strong foraging behavior, and striking appearance make them popular among hobbyists. • Setup: Begin with a test tube or small formicarium until the colony reaches around 30–50 workers. Then move them into a larger nest with an attached outworld.

• Humidity & Temperature: Maintain nest humidity around 60–70% and outworld humidity around 40–50%. Optimal temperature for active periods is 24–28 °C. They require a diapause (hibernation) period of about 3–4 months at 10–15 °C from November to February.

• Diet: Provide protein sources such as fruit flies, crickets, mealworms, or roaches. Offer carbohydrates via honey-water, sugar water, or jelly. Occasional fruit pieces like apple or grape can be added for variety.

• Behavior & Colony Growth: Colonies grow at a medium rate. In the first year, expect 20–40 workers, increasing to several hundred within a few years. Camponotus texanus is relatively calm, making it easy to handle and observe. Major workers begin appearing once the colony reaches about 50–100 workers.
