Formica fusca, also known as the silky ant or dusky ant, is a shiny black species commonly found across Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Known for its fast movement, timid nature, and ease of care, it’s an ideal choice for beginners looking to start with a hardy and intelligent species.
Formica fusca
In the wild, Formica fusca typically nests under stones, in dead wood, or in the soil along the edges of forests and open grasslands. Colonies are small, usually between 500 and 2,000 workers, and often contain multiple queens (polygynous). These ants feed on honeydew, nectar, and small insects. They are also known for their learning abilities—workers can be conditioned to detect scents, including those emitted by cancer cells in scientific studies. Nests are calm but very efficient when foraging, and they avoid aggression when possible.
