Solenopsis fugax, commonly known as the thief ant, is a tiny and highly specialized ant species found throughout Europe and parts of Asia. This species is famous for its secretive lifestyle and kleptoparasitic behavior, often nesting close to larger ant colonies and stealing food or brood through tiny underground tunnels. Colonies are usually polygynous, meaning they can contain multiple queens, and can grow into very large populations despite their extremely small worker size. Because of their unusual behavior and miniature size, Solenopsis fugax is a fascinating species for experienced ant keepers.

  • In the wild Solenopsis fugax inhabits dry grasslands, rocky areas, gardens, and open woodland habitats. They build tiny underground nests often near or even connected to nests of larger ant species. Their workers are so small that they can infiltrate neighboring colonies unnoticed.

Rather than relying entirely on hunting or foraging, Solenopsis fugax often steals brood, food, and resources from nearby ants. This behavior gives them their common name “thief ant”. Despite this, they also collect sugary liquids and small insects independently.

Colonies can grow rapidly under the right conditions and often contain many queens, allowing them to expand quickly. Due to their tiny size and fast movement, they are very efficient at exploiting food sources.
