Camponotus sexguttatus

This widespread, synanthropic species is quite variable in color, head sculpture and mesosomal structure. Majors and minors of this species can be recognized by the deeply depressed metanotal suture. The scapes of the majors, minors, and females have numerous erect hairs. The minor usually has erect hairs on the posterior margin, along the sides of the head, on the cheeks, and on the clypeus. The major and female usually have erect hairs only on the posterior margin, vertex, between the frontal carinae, and usually lack hairs on the sides of the head, on the cheeks, and on the clypeus. The workers and females range in color or from completely black, to brown, to bicolored (head and mesosoma red, gaster black). The gaster usually has lateral yellow splotches on each gastral tergite. 

Native range from Argentina to Nicaragua, plus the Caribbean. It has also become established in Florida and Hawaii.

General
Caring for Camponotus sexguttatus is pretty easy. If this colony is left at piece you should have no problem in raising this colony.

Food
Camponotus sexguttatus are not picky eaters. They love sugars that come from fruit, sugarwater or ant jellys. For protein the best food for them is fruitflies, mealworms, crickets and other smaller insects.

If you feed insects from the wild freeze or boil these insects to sterilize them. Skipping this step can introduce mites to your colony.

Humidity
Camponotus sexguttatus does not need a damp nest. If you hydrate the nest regularly (once or twice a week) you should have no problem in keeping the humidity right for these ants. Always make sure the ants have an external watersource.

Temperature
Since Camponotus sexguttatus  is a tropical species they thrive under a heated setup. Heat part of the setup to provide the ants with a nice gradient. 

Hibernation
Camponotus sexguttatus does not hibernate.

Sting/bite
This species does not sting or bite.
