Camponotus albosparsus
Camponotus albosparsus is a somewhat common species found mostly in China,Taiwan and parts of India. They are a beautiful species with workers having a dark red head, orange thorax and black gaster with yellow dots.Workers are 5-10mm long and queens 9-12mm.Colonies reach a couple thousand workers once mature and are monogynous.
General:
They are a fast growing species that’s very fun to keep and active.Food:
They have a varied diet and will accept foods eg mealworms, crickets, honey, sugar water etc.
If you feed insects from the wild freeze or boil these insects to sterilize them. Skipping this step can introduce mites to your colony.Humidity:
they don’t need high humidity. If you hydrate the nest semi-regularly (once or twice a week) you should have no problem in keeping the humidity right for these ants. Always make sure the ants have an external watersource in the test tube when in a nest.Temperature:
they need to be heated as they are from warm parts of Asia.26-28c is preferred.Hibernation:
they do not require a diapause but it is recommended to lower temperatures for a month or two in winter.Sting/bite:
they don’t sting, but can spray formic acid and majors can bite. They prefer drier conditions so wooden nests are preferred.
