Ant colonies are shipped in sealed test tubes with a small water reservoir, which gives the queen and workers everything they need for a journey of one to three days. When packed correctly, live ants arrive safely and are ready to settle into their new home within hours.

The most important factor is the seller's packaging. A test tube with a cotton plug holds enough moisture for the journey. The tube should be wrapped in padding to prevent shaking and placed inside a firm outer box. Temperature also matters, which is why we include heat packs in colder months.

When the parcel arrives, open it carefully and place the test tube in a dark, quiet spot at room temperature for a few hours before doing anything else. The journey is stressful for the ants, and giving them time to settle before you start moving them reduces the risk of the queen abandoning her brood.

After a few hours, you can connect the test tube to your formicarium and let the colony move across in their own time. Most colonies will explore their new home within a day or two.
