Myrmoteras binghamii, often called Bingham's Monstrous Ant, is one of the most unique and primitive trap-jaw ants in the world. Native to tropical Asia, this rare and cryptic species lives in moist forests and is famous for its enormous eyes and lightning-fast mandibles. With their small colony size and exotic behavior, they’re a dream species for advanced ant keepers.
Myrmoteras binghamii
These ants live in tropical forests across Southeast Asia, nesting under leaf litter or in soft soil beneath rotting logs. Colonies are tiny, typically with fewer than 20 workers, and often include multiple virgin queens alongside one mated queen. Queens are semi-claustral and actively hunt during founding. Prey includes springtails, termites, and other soft-bodied insects. With massive eyes and jaws that snap shut in a fraction of a second, Myrmoteras binghamii is built for precise ambush hunting.
