  • In its natural habitat, Odontomachus rixosus builds its nests under leaf litter, in the soil at the base of living trees, and under rotten logs and stumps. The species prefers both primary and secondary forests, thriving in lowland areas where the environment offers ample cover and resources. Within these habitats, colonies are polygynous, consisting of up to 200 workers that work together to hunt and defend their nest. Their foraging strategy is both efficient and aggressive—they primarily feed on food insects like cockroaches and crickets, supplemented by sweet fruits. Despite their aggressive nature, these ants display a fascinating social structure, with a queen measuring between 11 and 13 mm and workers around 10 to 12 mm in size. Their rapid jaw movements, combined with a potent sting, allow them to quickly subdue prey, making them formidable predators in their ecosystem.
