Colobopsis leonardi is one of the most unique and fascinating arboreal ant species available in the hobby. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this species is best known for its remarkable "door head" soldiers. These specialized workers have flattened heads that perfectly seal the entrance of the nest, protecting the colony from predators and rival ants. Their unusual appearance, calm behavior, and beautiful coloration make Colobopsis leonardi a highly desirable species for experienced ant keepers looking for something truly different.

  • In the wild, Colobopsis leonardi lives almost exclusively in trees, where it nests inside hollow twigs, branches, bamboo, and dead wood. Rather than digging their own nests, they occupy natural cavities and defend them using their unique phragmotic soldiers. These soldiers block the nest entrance with their modified heads, creating a living door that is almost impossible for predators to pass.

Workers forage through the forest canopy searching for honeydew, nectar, and small insects. Colonies generally remain relatively small, often consisting of only a few hundred workers, making them ideal for observation in captivity. Their arboreal lifestyle and specialized defense strategy make them one of the most fascinating carpenter ants to watch.
