In the wild, Opisthopsis picta thrives in warm and arid regions across Australia. Their nests are typically found in sandy or loose soil, often in areas exposed to sunlight. These ants are active foragers, searching for sugary liquids and proteins to sustain their colonies.

Their behavior is what truly sets them apart. When threatened or disturbed, workers move in rapid, erratic bursts, creating a strobe-like effect that confuses predators. The species is also noted for its visually striking appearance, with queens measuring 12-14mm and workers 4-6mm. Their bold orange and black patterns and unusually large eyes add to their distinctiveness.

Opisthopsis picta colonies are a great addition for both novice and experienced ant keepers. A queen can be housed in a basic test tube setup during the founding stage, where she does not require feeding. Once the colony reaches around 15 workers, they should be moved into a small nest to accommodate their growth.

These ants are particularly enjoyable to observe due to their vibrant coloration and unique behavior. Watching them forage and interact is a rewarding experience, and their ability to adapt to various setups makes them a versatile species for any ant keeper’s collection.

Caring for Opisthopsis picta is relatively straightforward. During the founding phase, a simple test tube setup with access to water will suffice. Feeding should begin when the first workers emerge. Their diet consists of a balance of sugars, such as honey or sugar water, and proteins like crickets, mealworms, or other small insects.

While they thrive in temperatures around 24-28°C, they are also quite hardy and can tolerate minor fluctuations. Humidity requirements are moderate, with hydration of their nest once or twice a week being sufficient. Additionally, always provide an external water source when the colony is housed in a nest.

Opisthopsis picta adapts well to a variety of setups, including acrylic and plaster-based nests. Their quirky strobe-like movements and striking coloration make them one of the most entertaining and visually appealing ant species to raise. With proper care, their colony will grow steadily, providing endless fascination to their keeper.
